The Olympic Flame Tours The Island

The people of the Isle of Man turned out in numbers to greet and cheer on the Olympic Torch which toured the Island on the 2nd June 2012.

We have produced this special envelope to celebrate this historic event - image for guidance only - actual cover features gold foil postmarks and silver foil text overprint.

• The Olympic Torch relay began with a full lap of the National Sports Centre track, offering some some of the best views of the torch on the day.
Famous off-road motorcyclist David Knight carried the torch - as a passenger for ex-TT rider Milky Quayle - riding from Quarterbridge to Braddan Bridge.

• The Douglas Lifeboat carried the Torch from the Battery Pier to Circus Beach.
A horse tram then conveyed it to the War Memorial from where aspiring cyclist and part-time IOM Post Office employee Tom Black rode, one-handed, to the north end of the Douglas Promenade, having had the flame passed on to him by Maureen Barnes-Sherring (a tireless worker for paralympic events).

• The Torch then made its way to Laxey carried on the Manx Electric Railway - stopping for a photo-shoot at the Laxey Wheel - the Torch relay continued its return journey to Castletown (and great celebrations in the town square) before continuing by air to Belfast.

You can view the official IOM Government film of the Torch's trip around the Island by clicking on the 'The Olympic Torch Visits The Isle of Man' link above.
